AC Coupled Batteries

Why consider an AC-coupled battery? You have an existing solar energy system without a hybrid inverter and would like to reduce the amount of solar energy you export to the grid. OR, you can’t install solar but want the benefits of a battery, such as blackout protection, enhanced energy management features, and bill reduction by shifting away from the Synergy Home Plan A1 tariff.

Two internationally renowned AC-coupled batteries are Tesla and Sigenergy. Their greatest strengths are exceeding user expectations with superior features beyond storage capacity. Alpha ESS is another leading global brand with an improved price point at face value. However, we recommend that customers assess every battery’s full product warranty, features, and useable kWH to determine actual value.

DC Coupled Batteries

Why consider a DC-coupled battery? You have an existing solar energy system with a compatible hybrid inverter. OR you are installing new solar and want to increase solar capacity above grid-imposed limitations [Note: selected AC-coupled batteries can also achieve this]. Another benefit is that DC-coupled batteries are often more cost-effective on a cost-per-kWh basis, as the cost of the battery inverter is negligible when considering the price.

DC-coupled battery systems are often more limited in features compared to AC-coupled batteries. However, adding selected enhancement features to DC-coupled batteries (such as blackout protection) is possible. But these add-ons make comparisons relative to the overall price.

We’ve found Goodwe and Sungrow among the best value, high-spec DC-coupled solar batteries with minimal warranty attention. Priced a little higher, BYD is an outstanding DC-coupled solar battery that is compatible with selected SMA and Fronius hybrid inverters. It’s important to remember that these batteries are compatible with selected hybrid inverter models and are not compatible with all inverter models.

Quite Likely. If you qualify for the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS), you can receive 2c off-peak and 10c peak for each unit (kWh) exported to the grid by your solar energy system.

As long as the battery is set to zero export and the solar inverter capacity isn’t being increased, you’ll likely still qualify for DEBS (subject to Synergy approval).

Yes. Because advertised system sizes in solar vs battery are entirely different.

Solar energy systems are advertised in kW. Kilowatts (kW) is the maximum peak power the combined system can produce at Standard Test Conditions.

Battery systems are sized by kWh. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) more accurately reflect power over time (a battery’s storage capacity). The inverter to which a battery is connected determines its peak power.

For example, combining a 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall with a 6.6 kW solar system is entirely acceptable. Because the 6.6 kW solar energy system produces an average of 30 kWh per day (power over time), resulting in the ability to store almost half your average daily solar generation yield.

It depends on how you use your power. Most solar batteries come in different sizes, but they all have a limited storage capacity. You choose your investment based on your stored energy needs. Cheaper batteries often have a reduced useable storage capacity compared to more moderately priced batteries.

When you exceed the battery’s stored capacity, your battery energy supply is consumed from other sources (solar or grid), and the battery will be unable to sufficiently provide energy offset.

3-phase power supplies are trickier than single-phase power supplies.

To keep it simple, single-phase battery systems can work with 3-phase power while still providing energy savings across all 3-phases, thanks to net metering here in Western Australia. However, if you require blackout protection, only one phase can be supportedTesla Powerwall does this brilliantly.

If all three phases must be supported in the event of a blackout, the best battery options are potentially DC-coupled batteries, as their output is governed by the connected inverter.

Yes. It’s all about battery selection, though. An AC-coupled battery is the easiest battery to add to an existing solar energy system.

Battery options broaden slightly if you possess an existing hybrid inverter. These are referred to as DC-coupled batteries. However, options in this format are limited by the inverter you have in place.
